PFOS Reduces Blood Vessel Formation in the Placenta

PFOS accumulates on the fetal side of the placenta and reduces blood vessel formation. Less blood supply means less oxygen and fewer nutrients reaching the baby.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study in J Hazard Mater gave pregnant mice PFOS at two doses throughout early to mid-pregnancy. Using mass spectrometry imaging, they tracked exactly where PFOS went in the placenta and fetus.

PFOS showed a gradient of accumulation from the maternal side to the fetal side, with the highest concentrations in the placental labyrinth zone, the area where nutrient and oxygen exchange happens. At the high dose, blood vessel formation was significantly reduced.

How PFOS Destroys Placental Blood Vessels

PFOS disrupted lipid metabolism in both the mother and placenta, altering membrane properties and impairing the endothelial cells that form blood vessels. It caused oxidative DNA damage (measured by 8-OHdG levels) and reduced key proteins needed for blood vessel growth, including vascular endothelial growth factors.

The placenta's antioxidant defense system (Nrf2) tried to compensate but wasn't enough to prevent the damage.

Why This Matters

Poor placental blood vessel development is linked to preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and pregnancy complications. PFOS exposure from everyday sources like contaminated water, nonstick cookware, and food packaging could be contributing to these outcomes.

How to Protect Your Pregnancy

Filter your water for PFAS. Replace nonstick cookware. Avoid stain-resistant and waterproof treated products. Check out non-toxic baby products for safer choices.
