The Chemicals You Can’t Escape

A 2026 study published in Ecohealth found that 97.4% of pregnant women tested had detectable levels of diethyl phthalate (DEP) in their urine. These chemicals are not just present; they are actively interfering with your body. Researchers found significant inverse associations between these common plasticizers and critical reproductive hormones, including progesterone and testosterone.

The study analyzed 384 pregnant women and found that as levels of MEP and MEHP (metabolites of DEP and DEHP) rose, hormone levels dropped. The data is clear: maternal exposure to these endocrine-disrupting compounds is directly linked to hormonal alterations during a period when fetal development is most vulnerable.

How to Reduce Your Exposure

Phthalates are everywhere, from food packaging to personal care products, but you can limit your intake. Start by ditching plastic food storage and choosing glass or stainless steel. Avoid fragranced products, which often hide phthalates under the label of 'parfum.' When preparing for a new arrival, be intentional about the materials you bring into your home. We have curated a selection of non-toxic baby alternatives to help you replace plastic gear with safer, tested materials that don't leach chemicals into your day-to-day life.
