Phthalates During Pregnancy Program Lower Cognitive Ability

Babies exposed to phthalates in the womb are being neuroprogrammed for lower cognitive ability. The plastic chemicals literally alter how the brain develops and thinks.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study measured prenatal phthalate exposure burden and found it was associated with reduced fluid cognition in children. Fluid cognition is the ability to solve new problems, think abstractly, and adapt to new situations. It's one of the most important measures of intellectual ability.

The study used latent variable modeling to capture the full burden of phthalate exposure, not just one chemical at a time. The combined exposure predicted worse cognitive outcomes.

What You Can Do

Reduce phthalate exposure during pregnancy. Go fragrance-free. Avoid plastic food containers. Skip fast food and processed meals. Choose phthalate-free personal care products.
