Propylparaben, a preservative in your shampoo, lotion, and food, destroys immune cells and wrecks gut bacteria in lab animals.
Immune Cells Wiped Out
Researchers exposed zebrafish embryos to propylparaben at three dose levels. The preservative significantly reduced neutrophils, macrophages, and hematopoietic stem cells (the cells that make your blood and immune system), according to a 2026 study in Fish Shellfish Immunol.
In embryos, propylparaben suppressed the TLR4/NF-kB pathway and anti-inflammatory cytokines. In adult zebrafish, the same pathway went the opposite direction: it was overactivated in intestinal and spleen tissue, with TNF-alpha, IL-1-beta, and IL-6 all ramping up. That means gut and immune organ inflammation.
Oxidative Stress Is the Driver
Propylparaben caused a surge in reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation. When researchers added the antioxidant astaxanthin, the immune damage was reduced, confirming oxidative stress as the mechanism.
The preservative also disrupted gut bacteria, reducing microbial diversity and increasing harmful bacteria like Aeromonas.
What You Can Do
Read labels on personal care products and skip anything with propylparaben (or methylparaben, butylparaben). Choose paraben-free options. And explore non-toxic home essentials for safer products.
