Recycled Plastic Is Loaded With Toxic Chemicals

That "recycled plastic" product you bought to be eco-friendly? It's loaded with phthalates, plasticizers, and flame retardants.

What's in Recycled Plastic Pellets

A 2026 study in Sci Total Environ tested recycled plastic pellets (the raw material used to make new plastic products) and found phthalates, non-phthalate plasticizers, and organophosphate flame retardants. When old plastics are recycled, the toxic additives come along for the ride.

Recycled plastic isn't clean plastic. It's a concentrated mixture of whatever chemicals were in the original products: food containers, electronics, furniture, toys. All those chemicals get melted down together and show up in the "new" recycled product.

Why Recycled Doesn't Mean Safe

Phthalates are endocrine disruptors. Organophosphate flame retardants are linked to thyroid problems and cancer. These chemicals leach from recycled products just like they leach from virgin plastic, maybe more, since the recycling process can break down the plastic matrix and release additives faster.

What You Can Do

Don't assume recycled plastic products are safer. When possible, choose non-plastic materials: glass, stainless steel, wood, ceramic. Be especially careful with recycled plastic food containers and children's products. Check out non-toxic home essentials for plastic-free options.
