Your toddler puts everything in their mouth. And soil and dust are full of heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals.
How Much Dirt Kids Actually Eat
A 2026 study in Sci Rep surveyed parents about their young children's activities that lead to soil and dust ingestion. The findings confirm what every parent knows: young kids touch everything, put their hands in their mouths, and play on the ground constantly. The study quantified the behaviors that drive this exposure.
Soil and household dust contain lead, arsenic, pesticide residues, phthalates, flame retardants, and PFAS. Every handful of dirt a toddler mouths is a dose of whatever chemicals are in that environment.
What You Can Do
Wet-mop floors regularly (dry sweeping spreads dust). Take shoes off at the door. Wash kids' hands frequently. Test soil in play areas for lead and other contaminants. Use a HEPA vacuum. Browse non-toxic baby products for a cleaner play environment.
