Thyroid nodules are becoming more common. Environmental toxins are a major reason why.
What's Causing Thyroid Nodules
A 2026 review in Horm Metab Res examined the origins of thyroid nodules and found a web of causes: inflammation, hormone disruption, environmental toxins, and micronutrient imbalances. Toxins from the environment play a central role.
The review covers how chemicals like PFAS, BPA, heavy metals, and pesticides disrupt thyroid function. These chemicals interfere with thyroid hormone production, trigger chronic inflammation in thyroid tissue, and create the conditions for nodule growth. Some nodules are benign. Some become thyroid cancer.
Why Thyroid Problems Are Exploding
Thyroid disease has been rising for decades. Part of it is better detection. But the review argues that increased exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals is a real driver. The thyroid gland is especially sensitive to environmental toxins because it concentrates certain chemicals from the bloodstream.
What You Can Do
Reduce your exposure to thyroid disruptors: filter your water, avoid nonstick cookware, choose BPA-free products, and limit pesticide exposure through organic food choices. Ensure adequate iodine and selenium intake. Browse non-toxic home essentials to protect your thyroid health.
