Every time you clean your washing machine lint filter, you are holding a concentrated cocktail of heavy metals and microplastics. A 2026 study published in Environmental Research shows that these fibers, when inhaled, trigger lung inflammation and disrupt essential cellular functions in the body.

Researchers exposed mice to lint microfibers for 90 days. The results were clear: the particles caused bronchial epithelium hyperplasia and forced immune cells to aggregate around the fibers in a state of frustrated phagocytosis. Essentially, your body tries to eat these plastic particles, fails, and gets inflamed in the process. Even worse, the study found that these fibers significantly downregulated mitochondrial DNA replication and inhibited proteins responsible for cellular iron uptake. You can read the full breakdown of the findings here.

You cannot stop doing laundry, but you can change what you wear and how you wash. Start by ditching synthetic-heavy clothing that sheds millions of microfibers per cycle. When you replace your household textiles, look for natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, or hemp that don't off-gas or shed plastic debris. We have curated a selection of non-toxic home alternatives to help you reduce your exposure to these airborne irritants. Stop breathing in your laundry.
