The Shellfish Connection

If you are looking at your grocery list, you might want to reconsider the seafood section. A 2026 study published in Chemosphere analyzed data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and found that shellfish consumption is the strongest dietary predictor of higher total and individual PFAS concentrations in the body.

While the study noted an overall 75% decline in serum PFAS levels between 2003 and 2020 due to regulatory changes, certain foods remain significant exposure pathways. The research showed that while meat intake had a modest association with PFAS levels, fish intake showed only weak or inconsistent links. Interestingly, higher dairy intake was actually associated with lower total PFAS levels, suggesting a complex relationship between diet and these persistent chemicals.

Taking Control of Your Kitchen

You cannot control every environmental factor, but you can control what enters your home. PFAS are often called forever chemicals because they do not break down, and they frequently leach into food through contaminated cookware and storage containers. If you are worried about your total chemical load, start by auditing your kitchen tools. Ditching old, scratched nonstick pans and plastic storage containers is a simple way to minimize your daily exposure. We have curated a selection of non-toxic kitchen alternatives that allow you to prepare and store food without adding to your chemical burden. Focus on stainless steel, glass, and solid wood to keep your kitchen clean and your exposure low.
