Are bamboo baby spoons safer than plastic or silicone?
Solid bamboo yes, bamboo-melamine composites no. The difference matters more than the marketing.
What's actually in it
There are two very different products sold as bamboo for babies. Solid bamboo utensils (sometimes with a light food-grade oil finish) are carved from real bamboo. These contain no plastic. Bamboo-melamine composites (also called "bamboo fiber" or "bamboo ware") are bamboo powder glued together with melamine-formaldehyde resin. These are plastic dressed as bamboo.
On the shelf, they look similar. The difference is how they behave with hot food.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Food Chem X tested bamboo-based food contact items and found melamine, formaldehyde, and dozens of other migrants coming out of the composite products, especially with hot or acidic food. Solid bamboo utensils don't have this problem.
Check the label for "100% bamboo" or "solid bamboo." If it says "bamboo fiber" or "bamboo melamine," treat it as melamine plastic. Stainless steel baby spoons and pure silicone spoons are also clean options.
