Illustration for Can food packaging made from plant-based bioplastics also release harmful chemicals?

Are compostable food containers actually safer than regular plastic?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Some Concern

Not necessarily. A 2025 study found plant-based compostable containers shed micro-particles that triggered cell damage, just like petroleum-based plastic ones.

The "eco-friendly" assumption

Compostable takeout containers, cups, and cutlery are made from plant-based plastics like PLA (from corn starch). They sound safer because they come from plants. But plant-based doesn't mean harmless. These materials still go through heavy industrial processing and can contain additives.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater put both regular plastic and plant-based food containers to the test. The researchers checked whether each type shed micro-particles, and then exposed human cells to those particles.

Both types released micro-particles that got absorbed by cells. The plant-based particles caused inflammation and oxidative stress, just like the petroleum-based ones. In some cases, the bioplastic particles had their own unique toxic effects not seen with regular plastic.

What you can do

Don't assume compostable means safe for food contact. Use glass, stainless steel, or ceramic containers at home. When ordering takeout, transfer food to your own containers as soon as possible. Avoid microwaving food in any plastic container, compostable or not.
