Are conventional laundry detergents safe for babies' clothes?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Caution

Caution. Conventional detergents with synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and preservatives can irritate baby skin and contribute to chemical exposure through skin absorption.

What's actually in it

Conventional laundry detergents contain synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, surfactants, preservatives like methylisothiazolinone (MI), and sometimes phthalate-based fragrance carriers. These compounds remain as residues in fabric after washing. Fabric softener sheets add even more fragrance chemicals and silicone-based coating agents that stay in the fabric.

Baby skin is 20-30% thinner than adult skin and significantly more permeable. Chemicals that sit on fabric surfaces against baby skin can absorb at higher rates than they would through adult skin. Babies also spend 16+ hours daily in fabric (clothing, bedding) in close skin contact.

What the research says

A 2026 study on phthalates in clothing found that synthetic fabric-care products contribute meaningfully to children's phthalate body burden through skin absorption. Researchers confirmed that fragrance chemicals in fabric care products transfer from fabric to skin during normal wear.

For baby clothes and bedding, use fragrance-free, dye-free detergents with minimal ingredients. Skip fabric softener entirely for baby items. Line dry when possible, as tumble drying can bond fragrance residues more firmly to fabric. Look for detergents with enzyme-based cleaning (no synthetic fragrance) as the main active ingredient.
