Are cork yoga mats safer than PVC or TPE?
Yes. Cork doesn't off-gas, doesn't shed phthalates, and holds up to regular use.
What's actually in it
A pure cork yoga mat is cork bark bonded to a natural rubber base. No PVC, no phthalates, no PFAS. Cork has natural antimicrobial properties, which means less bacteria build-up without chemical treatments.
The main thing to check is the adhesive and the rubber backing. Some cheaper cork mats use polyurethane or latex adhesives that can off-gas.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Nat Commun linked prenatal phthalate exposure to changes in newborn metabolism and slower infant neurodevelopment. Phthalates come out of PVC yoga mats during practice. Cork doesn't carry that load.
Look for mats labeled "100% natural cork with natural rubber backing" and no added glues or PVC layers. A good cork mat lasts years and gets better with use.
