Reusable polyester and nylon masks shed microplastic fibers that wearers inhale directly. Cotton masks shed cotton fibers, which the body handles far better. Disposable surgical masks are polypropylene, which also sheds microfibers.
Daily wear for hours a day is the worst exposure path because you're breathing the fibers.

A 2025 study in Environ Monit Assess documented widespread microplastic shedding from plastic fibers. A 2025 study traced microplastics to brain vessels in mice.
For low-risk daily wear, tightly woven organic cotton masks are cleaner. For medical-grade filtration, a well-fitted N95 still wins. Wash cotton masks on cool and line dry to reduce shedding.
