Are fragrance-free baby lotions actually safer?
Usually yes, if they also skip parabens and phthalates. Check the full ingredient list.
What's actually in it
"Fragrance-free" cuts out added scents and the phthalates used as fragrance carriers. That's meaningful: phthalates in scented products are a major source. But "fragrance-free" doesn't mean "preservative-free." Many baby lotions still contain parabens, methylisothiazolinones, or phenoxyethanol.
Preservatives are important (unpreserved lotion grows bacteria), but some have better safety profiles than others.
What the research says
A 2025 ENVIRONAGE study in Environ Res linked paraben exposure in kids to changes in leptin and ghrelin, the hormones that regulate hunger. A 2025 mouse study tied propylparaben in pregnancy to reduced ovarian reserve across three generations.
Look for lotions that are fragrance-free AND paraben-free AND phthalate-free, with short ingredient lists. A single certification (EWG Verified, Made Safe) is usually a good signal.
