Can endocrine-disrupting chemicals from household products be detected in the placenta?

What's actually in it

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are found in a huge range of household products. Bisphenols hide in food can liners and plastic bottles. Phthalates soften plastic wrap and vinyl shower curtains. Parabens preserve lotions and shampoos. PFAS coat nonstick pans and stain-resistant fabrics. You absorb small doses of each throughout the day.

The placenta is meant to be a barrier between a pregnant person's blood and the baby. But many of these chemicals slip through.

What the research says

A 2026 pilot study in Toxics analyzed human placental tissue for a panel of endocrine disruptors. The researchers found detectable levels of multiple chemicals in every sample tested.

Bisphenol A and phthalate metabolites were the most common findings. But the study also detected newer replacement chemicals that manufacturers claim are safer. The placentas with higher chemical loads showed histopathological changes, meaning visible tissue damage under a microscope.

Damaged placental tissue doesn't transfer oxygen and nutrients as effectively. This can lead to restricted fetal growth, preeclampsia, and preterm delivery. The chemicals also disrupt placental hormone production, which keeps pregnancy on track.

This study confirms what many suspected: the baby's first chemical exposure begins in the womb, not after birth. Cutting EDC exposure before and during pregnancy makes a real difference. Choose glass food containers, fragrance-free personal care products, and uncoated cookware to reduce the chemical load on your placenta.
