Are ionizer air purifiers safer than HEPA?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid

No. Ionizers can produce ozone, which is a lung irritant.

What's actually in it

Ionizer air purifiers charge particles so they fall out of the air. Many models also produce ozone as a byproduct, which irritates lungs and can trigger asthma. HEPA filters don't do this.

What the research says

A 2025 trial in J Am Coll Cardiol showed HEPA air purifiers measurably lowered blood pressure in real homes. Ionizer studies generally don't show similar clean benefits.

Skip ionizers. Use a true HEPA air purifier sized for your room.
