Are makeup and lotion a bigger BPA source than food packaging now?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid

For some adults yes. Personal care products carry hidden bisphenols that absorb through skin all day.

What's actually in it

Bisphenols sneak into makeup and lotion through the plastic packaging, the color carrier, and small amounts used as preservatives. BPA, BPS, BPF, and BPAF all show up in surveys of foundation, lipstick, body lotion, and shampoo.

Skin absorbs steadily through the day. A daily routine of lotion + foundation + lipstick is hours of contact across a big surface area.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Food Chem Toxicol ran a probabilistic risk assessment on bisphenols from personal care products. For adults who use multiple products daily, cosmetics added a meaningful share of total BPA-family exposure, sometimes rivaling food packaging.

The mix of bisphenols in beauty products often included BPS and BPF, which act on the same hormone receptors as BPA.

Cut your daily product count. Skip long-wear lipsticks and foundations, which use the most plastic-derived chemicals. Pick brands that publish full ingredient lists and avoid "fragrance" and "parfum" when you can. Glass-jar lotions are cleaner than plastic-tube ones.
