Are organic cotton mattresses safer for babies than foam?
Yes. Natural fiber mattresses skip the VOCs, flame retardants, and foam off-gassing that fill nurseries.
What's actually in it
Foam crib mattresses use polyurethane with flame retardants and a vinyl (PVC) cover for waterproofing. Organic cotton crib mattresses use natural cotton batting, sometimes wool (which passes fire tests naturally), and a food-grade polyethylene or wool waterproof layer instead of PVC.
Babies sleep 14 to 18 hours a day, face inches from the mattress.
What the research says
A 2025 screening study in Environ Sci Technol found foam furniture and bedding among the heaviest carriers of flame retardants and VOCs. A 2025 study in Sci Total Environ showed sweat increases skin transfer of organophosphate flame retardants.
Look for GOTS-certified organic cotton or GOLS-certified natural latex mattresses with wool as the fire barrier. Skip anything that smells strongly new.
