Are PFAS in firefighter gear a worry for families at home?
Yes. Firefighter PFAS levels are very high and can track home with gear.
What's actually in it
Firefighter turnout gear uses PFAS in moisture barriers and stain-resistant outer layers. Crews also use AFFF firefighting foam loaded with PFAS. The chemicals stick to skin, gear, and household dust if gear comes home.
What the research says
A 2026 study in J Occup Environ Med measured PFAS in US career firefighters and identified the predictors of high exposure. The amounts in their blood were much higher than the general population. Family members touch the same items when gear comes inside the home.
If a family member is a firefighter, keep gear in the garage or a separate entryway. Wash work clothes separately from family laundry. Wipe down boots and bags before bringing them inside. Vacuum and damp-mop entry areas weekly. For everyone, pick non-PFAS waterproof clothing for everyday use, like waxed cotton or PFAS-free rain shells.
