Are plastic tea bags worse than paper ones?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. Pyramid plastic tea bags release billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles into a single cup.

What's actually in it

"Silk" pyramid tea bags are nylon, PET, or PLA plastic mesh. Boiling water at 95°C steeping for several minutes is an ideal condition to pull particles out. A single plastic tea bag can release 11 billion microplastic and 3 billion nanoplastic particles per cup.

Paper tea bags aren't always clean either. Some use epichlorohydrin or PFAS for wet strength. Cotton-string tea bags without heat-seal are the cleanest disposable choice.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem shows hot water strips particles from any polypropylene-like plastic. A 2025 study in Sci Adv tracked microplastics from gut into bloodstream and brain.

Use loose leaf tea with a stainless steel strainer, or paper tea bags labeled "plastic-free, no heat-seal" (look for brands that explicitly state this).
