Are silicone breast pump parts safe for daily use?
Platinum-grade silicone yes, cheap filled silicone no. Quality is the key.
What's actually in it
Silicone breast pump flanges, valves, and bottles are made from polydimethylsiloxane. Platinum-cured food-grade silicone is stable and leaks only trace cyclic siloxanes. Cheap peroxide-cured silicone with fillers releases more.
Breast milk is pumped warm, which accelerates siloxane release from lower-quality parts.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater measured D4, D5, and D6 release from silicone at kitchen temperatures. New silicone leaked the most; quality grade made a big difference.
Look for medical-grade or platinum-cured silicone labels. Replace worn or cloudy parts. Sterilize briefly rather than long boils.
