Are silicone straws safer than plastic ones for daily use?
Yes for most drinks. Platinum-grade silicone beats any disposable plastic straw.
What's actually in it
Disposable plastic straws are polypropylene or polystyrene. Bite, heat, and acidic drinks speed particle release. Platinum-grade silicone straws are stable across temperatures and last for years. Cheap filled silicone releases more siloxanes, so quality matters.
Stainless steel and glass straws are also clean alternatives.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem measured nanoplastic release from polypropylene, which is what many plastic straws are made of. A 2025 study measured trace siloxane release from silicone: real but much smaller.
For daily use, stainless steel, glass, or platinum-grade silicone straws are all solid upgrades over disposable plastic.
