Are vegan leather handbags actually safer than real leather?
Usually no. Most vegan leather is PVC or polyurethane, full of phthalates and solvents.
What's actually in it
"Vegan leather" is usually PVC or polyurethane. PVC uses phthalates to stay soft. Polyurethane uses DMF solvents during manufacturing. Both off-gas for months after purchase and shed microplastics with wear.
Newer plant-based leathers (mushroom, cactus, pineapple) are cleaner but still often blended with PU for durability.
What the research says
A 2025 screening study in Environ Sci Technol mapped phthalates and solvents across consumer products. A 2025 study linked phthalates to slower infant neurodevelopment.
If you're avoiding leather, look for certified plant-based alternatives (Piñatex, MIRUM, mushroom leather) or waxed canvas bags. Both are more durable and cleaner than PVC vegan leather.
