Are waterproof crib mattress covers safe for babies?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Depends on material. PVC covers leach phthalates; PFAS-coated fabric leaches forever chemicals. Food-grade PE or wool is safer.

What's actually in it

"Waterproof" can mean several things. Cheap covers are PVC or vinyl, softened with phthalates. "Water-resistant" fabric covers are often coated with PFAS. Better alternatives include food-grade polyethylene, TPU (polyurethane without phthalates), and tightly woven wool, which is naturally water-resistant.

Babies sweat onto the cover, which speeds up chemical transfer.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Sci Total Environ showed sweat pulls PFAS and organophosphate flame retardants out of textiles onto skin. A 2025 study in Nat Commun linked phthalate exposure to slower infant neurodevelopment.

For a crib, look for a cover labeled "food-grade polyethylene", "no PVC, no phthalates, no PFAS", or a wool puddle pad for nighttime protection over the fitted sheet.
