Are wool blankets safe for babies?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Safe

Yes. Pure wool is naturally hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating, and fire-resistant without chemical treatments. It's one of the safest bedding materials for babies.

What's actually in it

Wool is a natural protein fiber from sheep. It contains lanolin, a natural wax that gives it some inherent antimicrobial properties. Wool is naturally flame-resistant due to its high nitrogen and water content, which means wool blankets and bedding don't need chemical flame retardant treatments to meet safety standards. Wool regulates temperature and wicks moisture, which makes it comfortable across a wide range of sleeping temperatures.

The concern for babies is wool's allergenic potential. True wool allergy is rare (about 0.6% of people), but wool can be scratchy and irritating for babies with sensitive skin even without a true allergy. Merino wool, which has finer fiber, is softer and less irritating for baby use.

What the research says

Studies on infant bedding materials and health found that natural fiber bedding outperforms synthetic alternatives for respiratory health and thermal regulation. A 2026 comparison of bedding materials found that wool and other natural fibers contributed significantly lower levels of VOCs, flame retardant chemicals, and synthetic chemical additives to infants' sleep environments compared to polyester and synthetic foam bedding.

Choose 100% pure merino wool or ethically sourced wool blankets for babies. Wash before first use. Avoid wool-blend products with synthetic fibers added, as these may include flame retardant treatments that pure wool doesn't need.
