Verdict: Some Concern

Some Concern

What's actually in it

Artificial food colors like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 show up in cereals, candy, juice boxes, snack bars, and even some medications. These synthetic dyes are made from petroleum byproducts. Kids eat more of them per pound of body weight than adults because so many children's foods contain them.

What the research says

A 2026 review in Bioessays explored whether artificial food colors could act as sleep disruptors in children. The researchers found evidence that these dyes may interfere with neurobehavioral pathways and circadian rhythms, the internal clock that tells the body when to sleep and wake up.

Some food dyes can cross the blood-brain barrier. Once there, they may affect dopamine and serotonin, two brain chemicals that play a role in both behavior and sleep cycles. Children who eat more processed food tend to have higher exposure to these dyes.

If your child has trouble sleeping, try cutting out brightly colored processed snacks and drinks for a few weeks. Look for foods colored with beet juice, turmeric, or fruit extracts instead of synthetic dyes.
