Some Concern

What's actually in it

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in diet sodas, sugar-free gum, low-calorie yogurts, and thousands of other "sugar-free" products. It's one of the most widely consumed food additives in the world. Once in your gut, aspartame and its breakdown products interact directly with the cells lining your intestines.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Allergy tested aspartame's effects on gut epithelial cells. The researchers found that aspartame caused cellular stress, triggered inflammation, and damaged the gut barrier. The gut barrier normally keeps bacteria and toxins from leaking into your bloodstream.

A damaged gut barrier (sometimes called "leaky gut") can contribute to food sensitivities, autoimmune reactions, and chronic inflammation. People who consume aspartame daily through multiple sources get repeated insults to their gut lining.

Try reducing aspartame by switching from diet soda to sparkling water with fruit. Use small amounts of real sugar or honey instead of packets of artificial sweetener.
