Can BPA-free plastic products still affect your child's IQ?
Yes. A 2025 prospective study found that children exposed to BPA replacement chemicals (BPS, BPF) at age 4 had lower IQ scores at age 6.
What's actually in it
Products labeled "BPA-free" usually still contain bisphenols. They just use different ones: bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), or other analogs. These replacements are found in plastic food containers, water bottles, canned food linings, thermal receipt paper, and children's products. They were introduced because BPA got bad press, but they have similar chemical structures.
Like BPA, these analogs can mimic estrogen and interfere with hormones involved in brain development. Children are exposed through food packaging, drinking containers, and mouthing plastic items.
What the research says
A 2025 prospective study in Environ Res measured bisphenol analog levels in the urine of 4-year-old children and then tested their IQ at age 6. By measuring exposure first and outcomes later, the study could track whether earlier chemical exposure predicted later cognitive performance.
Children with higher levels of certain bisphenol analogs at age 4 scored lower on IQ tests at age 6. The association was statistically meaningful even after accounting for family income, parental education, and other factors that affect IQ.
The specific analogs that showed the strongest links were the ones most commonly used as BPA replacements in consumer products. These results suggest that swapping BPA for BPS or BPF in products hasn't solved the underlying problem for children's brain development.
Reducing exposure means moving away from plastic food and drink containers entirely, not just switching to "BPA-free" versions. Glass, stainless steel, and silicone don't contain any bisphenols.
