Some Concern

What's actually in it

Microplastics enter children's food from plastic packaging, bottles, food containers, and processed food production lines. Kids who eat more packaged snacks, drink from plastic bottles, and eat fewer whole foods get a bigger dose of these tiny plastic particles. The way food is stored and prepared matters too.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Int measured microplastic exposure in school-aged children and compared it to their eating habits. The researchers found that children with diet patterns heavy in packaged and processed foods had higher microplastic levels. Kids who ate more fresh fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals had lower exposure.

The study showed that diet choices were one of the strongest predictors of how many microplastics a child ingests. Since children eat more food per pound of body weight than adults, their relative exposure is higher.

Pack lunches in stainless steel or glass containers. Give kids water from a reusable metal bottle instead of plastic. Choose whole fruits over individually wrapped snacks, and cook at home when you can.
