Can flame retardants and heavy metals together increase your risk of depression?
Some Concern
What's actually in it
You're exposed to both PBDEs (flame retardants) from furniture and electronics and heavy metals from food and water at the same time. PBDEs escape from older foam products as dust. Metals come from contaminated food, water, and cookware. Both types of chemicals can cross the blood-brain barrier.
What the research says
A 2026 study in J Affect Disord examined the joint effects of PBDEs and metals on depression risk. The researchers found that the combination of flame retardants and heavy metals together increased depression risk more than either group alone. The chemicals work through overlapping brain pathways that regulate mood.
Both PBDEs and metals cause brain inflammation and oxidative stress. When the brain faces both threats at once, its defenses are overwhelmed more easily.
Reduce flame retardant dust by vacuuming with a HEPA filter and replacing old foam furniture. Filter your water and eat a varied diet to limit metal accumulation.
