Can glyphosate herbicide residues on food damage sperm quality?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Use Caution

Yes. Glyphosate exposure impaired sperm development by disrupting a key process inside sperm cells, reducing their ability to fertilize an egg.

What's actually in it

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and the most widely used herbicide on the planet. It's sprayed on conventional crops, and residues remain on wheat, oats, soybeans, corn, and many fruits and vegetables when they reach your kitchen. Glyphosate has been found in bread, cereal, crackers, beer, and even honey. You eat small amounts with nearly every non-organic meal.

What the research says

A 2026 study in J Hazard Mater tested how environmental levels of glyphosate affect sperm development. The researchers found that glyphosate damaged the acrosome, the cap-like structure on the head of each sperm cell that's essential for penetrating and fertilizing an egg.

Glyphosate disrupted a specific cellular process called GOLPH3-mediated golgiphagy, which is how sperm cells build and maintain their acrosomes. Without a functional acrosome, sperm can't complete fertilization even if they reach the egg. The study showed this damage happened at exposure levels consistent with what people encounter through food and water.

Sperm quality has been declining worldwide for decades, and environmental chemicals are a leading suspect. Glyphosate's ability to directly impair sperm function adds another piece to that puzzle.

Choosing organic versions of heavily sprayed crops like wheat, oats, and soy reduces glyphosate intake. Washing produce helps with surface residues, but glyphosate absorbed into the plant tissue can't be washed off.
