Can laundry detergent residue on clothes make allergies and asthma worse?

Laundry detergents contain a mix of surfactants, fragrances, enzymes, and optical brighteners. After washing, traces of these chemicals stay in the fabric. As you wear your clothes, body heat and movement release tiny detergent particles into the air around your face. You breathe them in all day long. Scented detergents and fabric softeners leave even more residue behind.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Allergy tested what happens when laundry detergent particles are inhaled alongside common allergens like dust mites or pollen. The results were striking: the detergent enhanced sensitization to allergens, meaning the immune system became much more reactive to things it might otherwise tolerate.

Animals exposed to both detergent particles and allergens developed worse airway inflammation than those exposed to allergens alone. The detergent acted like a booster, amplifying the allergic response. It damaged the protective lining of the airways, making it easier for allergens to penetrate and trigger a reaction.

This helps explain why some people with asthma or allergies notice their symptoms flare up after switching detergents, or why babies with eczema seem to react to freshly washed clothes. The detergent residue is a constant, low-level irritant.

Fragrance-free, dye-free detergents leave less residue. Running an extra rinse cycle washes out more of what's left. For people with sensitive airways, liquid detergents dissolve more completely than pods or powders.
