What's actually in it

Drinking water systems near industrial facilities face higher microplastic contamination. Factories, recycling plants, and waste processing sites release plastic particles into nearby waterways. Standard water treatment reduces but doesn't eliminate these particles before they reach your tap.

What the research says

A 2026 study in J Hazard Mater tracked microplastics through a drinking water supply system near industrial facilities. The study found microplastics at every stage, from source water through treatment to distribution. Treatment removed many particles, but smaller ones passed through.

Source identification showed that industrial discharge was the primary contributor. Homes closest to industrial water sources had the highest microplastic levels in their tap water.

If you live near industrial sites, test your water and use a home filter rated for particles down to 1 micron. Reverse osmosis is the most effective option for removing microplastics.
