Can personal care products affect your thyroid function?
Some Concern
What's actually in it
Shampoos, lotions, makeup, and sunscreen contain parabens, UV filters, phthalates, and triclosan. These chemicals are absorbed through your skin and build up in your body. Your thyroid gland, which controls metabolism and energy, is sensitive to endocrine-disrupting chemicals from daily product use.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf examined the link between personal care product chemical exposure and thyroid function in adults. The researchers found that higher levels of these chemicals were associated with disrupted thyroid hormones. The study also explored the biological mechanisms behind the disruption.
Disrupted thyroid function can cause fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. Long-term disruption increases the risk of thyroid disease.
Choose fragrance-free, paraben-free products with short ingredient lists. Use mineral sunscreen instead of chemical versions. Reduce the total number of products you use daily.
