Can pesticide exposure during pregnancy delay a child's brain development?

What's actually in it

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) like DDT, DDE, lindane, and hexachlorobenzene were banned decades ago in most countries, but they persist in the environment. They accumulate in animal fat, so you're exposed through fatty fish, meat, dairy products, and eggs. They also linger in contaminated soil and can enter the food chain through crops grown in that soil.

OCPs are stored in your body fat and slowly released into the bloodstream. During pregnancy, they cross the placenta and reach the developing baby.

What the research says

A 2026 prospective birth cohort study in Environ Int measured organochlorine pesticide levels in pregnant women's blood and followed their children's neurodevelopment through early childhood.

Children with higher prenatal OCP exposure showed lower cognitive scores on standardized tests. DDE (a breakdown product of DDT) had the strongest association with delayed language development and reduced fine motor skills.

The effects were most pronounced when exposure occurred during the first trimester, when the brain's foundational circuits are being formed. OCPs disrupt thyroid hormones, dopamine signaling, and calcium regulation in developing brain cells, all of which can alter the timing of brain development.

You can't completely avoid OCPs since they're embedded in the food supply. But eating lower-fat cuts of meat, choosing low-fat dairy, and trimming fat from fish can reduce your intake, since OCPs concentrate in fat. Eating a varied diet from diverse sources also limits exposure from any single contaminated source.
