Can PFAS contaminated drinking water cause lasting health effects?
Yes. Populations exposed to PFAS through drinking water accumulate high serum PFAS and suffer health impacts.
What's actually in it
PFAS enter drinking water from manufacturing sites, military base firefighting foam (AFFF), and agricultural use of PFAS-containing products. Once in groundwater, they persist essentially forever. Communities near PFAS sources often have contaminated municipal water systems without knowing it until testing reveals the problem.
Unlike PFAS from cookware (which involves relatively low daily doses), contaminated drinking water can provide much higher continuous PFAS exposure to entire populations.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environ Health Prev Med measured serum PFAS levels in a population exposed to PFAS through drinking water in western Japan. They found high serum PFAS levels in exposed individuals that were associated with thyroid function disruption, immune effects, and other health markers. The levels were much higher than background population averages.
If you're concerned about your area's water quality, the EPA now requires public water systems to test for PFAS. Results are publicly available. A reverse osmosis filter removes PFAS from tap water effectively.
Store filtered water in glass food storage and use stainless steel cookware to avoid adding more PFAS to your total exposure.
