Can PFAS exposure during pregnancy increase preeclampsia risk?
Possibly. A 2025 study from the ECHO Cohort found associations between gestational PFAS levels and increased preeclampsia risk.
What's actually in it
PFAS from nonstick pans, food packaging, and contaminated water circulate in a pregnant woman's blood and can affect vascular function. Preeclampsia is a dangerous pregnancy complication marked by high blood pressure and organ damage.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Environ Res from the ECHO Cohort measured PFAS biomarkers during pregnancy and tracked preeclampsia diagnoses. Women with higher PFAS levels had a greater risk of developing preeclampsia. The association was consistent across multiple PFAS compounds.
Reduce PFAS exposure before and during pregnancy by filtering drinking water and avoiding nonstick cookware and PFAS-treated food packaging.
