Can PFAS from nonstick pans and water increase your risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy?

Some Concern

What's actually in it

PFAS enter your body through nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, food packaging, and contaminated tap water. During pregnancy, these chemicals circulate in your blood and can affect blood vessel function. Preeclampsia is a dangerous pregnancy complication involving high blood pressure and organ damage that can threaten both mother and baby.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Res measured PFAS levels in pregnant women from the ECHO Cohort and tracked who developed preeclampsia. The researchers found that women with higher PFAS exposure had a greater risk of preeclampsia. The association was seen with multiple types of PFAS, including both legacy and newer replacement compounds.

PFAS may trigger preeclampsia by damaging blood vessel lining, promoting inflammation, and disrupting placental function. Since preeclampsia can lead to preterm birth, low birth weight, and life-threatening complications, this link is worrying.

Before and during pregnancy, avoid nonstick cookware and filter your water with a reverse osmosis or activated carbon system. Skip stain-resistant treatments on furniture and clothing.
