Can PFAS from nonstick products raise your cholesterol and blood fat levels?

What's actually in it

PFAS enter your body from nonstick cookware, grease-resistant food packaging, stain-treated fabrics, and contaminated tap water. Once absorbed, they linger in your blood for years. Your liver, which manages cholesterol production and fat metabolism, processes most of the PFAS you take in.

High cholesterol is one of the top risk factors for heart disease and stroke. If everyday chemical exposure is driving cholesterol up, that's a problem affecting millions of people.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Int tracked PFAS concentrations in human blood over time and compared them with blood lipid levels. The researchers found a consistent correlation: as PFAS went up, so did total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the harmful kind), and triglycerides.

The mechanism centers on the liver. PFAS interfere with bile acid metabolism, the process your liver uses to clear cholesterol from the blood. When bile acid production drops, cholesterol builds up. PFAS also activate lipid synthesis pathways in liver cells, telling them to produce more fat.

The relationship was dose-dependent: people with higher PFAS blood levels had higher lipid levels. Even people with otherwise healthy diets and exercise habits showed elevated cholesterol when their PFAS levels were high.

If your cholesterol is stubbornly high despite a good diet, PFAS exposure could be a hidden factor. Switching from nonstick to ceramic or stainless steel cookware, filtering tap water, and avoiding grease-proof food packaging can help lower your PFAS burden over time.
