Can PFOS from nonstick products cause kidney damage?

What's actually in it

PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) is one of the most widespread PFAS forever chemicals. It was used for decades in nonstick cookware, stain-resistant treatments, food packaging, and fire-fighting foam. Although it's been phased out of new production, PFOS persists in the environment and in people's blood for years. Your kidneys filter it from your blood, putting them in direct contact with high PFOS concentrations.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf discovered that PFOS causes kidney damage through a specific type of cell death called ferroptosis. This iron-centered process destroys cells from the inside out.

PFOS disrupted the mitochondria in kidney cells, causing them to produce excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS reacted with iron stored in the cells, triggering a chain reaction of lipid peroxidation that shredded cell membranes. The kidney cells died without the normal signs of programmed cell death, making the damage harder for the body to detect and repair.

The study also found that PFOS suppressed GPX4, the main enzyme that normally stops ferroptosis. Without this safety brake, even low levels of PFOS could start the destructive chain reaction.

The damage followed a dose-response pattern: more PFOS meant more ferroptosis and worse kidney function. The findings help explain why population studies consistently link PFAS exposure to declining kidney health.

Protect your kidneys by reducing PFAS intake. Replace old nonstick pans, filter your tap water, and avoid stain-resistant fabric treatments.
