Can phthalate exposure during pregnancy raise your child's blood pressure?

What's actually in it

Phthalates are plasticizers found in vinyl flooring, food packaging, personal care products, and soft plastic toys. They leach out of these products and get into your body through food, skin contact, and air. During pregnancy, phthalates cross the placenta and reach your developing baby.

Unlike some chemicals that wash out of your system quickly, phthalates can cause lasting changes by altering how your baby's genes are read. These changes, called epigenetic modifications, can affect health for years after exposure ends.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Pollut measured phthalate levels in pregnant women and then checked their children's blood pressure at preschool age. The researchers also examined DNA methylation, a type of chemical tag that controls gene activity, in genes related to blood pressure.

Children whose mothers had higher phthalate levels during pregnancy had measurably higher blood pressure at ages 3 to 5. The effect was clear even after accounting for other factors like diet and family history.

The connection worked through DNA methylation. Phthalates changed the chemical tags on hypertension-related genes, essentially reprogramming how the child's body manages blood pressure. These epigenetic changes were detectable years after the exposure happened.

High blood pressure in childhood often carries into adulthood. Reducing phthalate exposure during pregnancy could help prevent a lifetime of cardiovascular risk.
