Can phthalates from plastic products speed up ovarian aging?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. Phthalates accelerate the loss of eggs in the ovaries through inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormone disruption.

What's actually in it

Phthalates are in vinyl products, food packaging, fragranced products, and cosmetics. Women absorb them through food, skin, and air every day. These chemicals accumulate in reproductive tissues, including the ovaries.

Women are born with a fixed number of eggs. As you age, that supply dwindles. Anything that speeds up egg loss can lead to earlier menopause and reduced fertility.

What the research says

A 2026 review in Curr Environ Health Rep examined the mechanisms by which phthalates accelerate ovarian aging. The researchers compiled evidence from multiple experimental studies.

Phthalates damage ovarian follicles through three main pathways: oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and direct hormone disruption. These mechanisms work together to speed up the natural decline.

Oxidative stress damages the DNA inside eggs, triggering cell death programs that destroy follicles ahead of schedule. Inflammation adds more damage by recruiting immune cells that attack healthy ovarian tissue.

Phthalates also directly interfere with estrogen and progesterone production, throwing off the hormonal balance that protects eggs from premature destruction. The combined effect can age your ovaries years beyond your actual age.
