Pregnant women are exposed to microplastics and nanoplastics from the same sources as everyone else: plastic food containers, water bottles, synthetic clothing, household dust, and personal care products. But during pregnancy, the stakes are higher. These tiny particles can cross the placental barrier and reach the developing baby.
A growing fetus depends entirely on what comes through the placenta. If plastic particles make it across, they bring along any chemicals they've absorbed on their surface.
What the research says
A 2026 systematic review in Environ Res gathered studies on how prenatal micro- and nanoplastic exposure affects fetal development. The review looked at both human and animal data to get a full picture.
The findings showed a clear pattern: higher plastic particle exposure during pregnancy was linked to restricted intrauterine growth. Babies weren't growing as well as they should have been. Some studies found lower birth weights, while others found smaller head sizes or shorter body lengths.
Nanoplastics were worth paying attention to because they cross the placenta more easily than larger microplastics. Once on the fetal side, they can trigger inflammation and oxidative stress in developing tissues.
The review also noted that the effects were dose-related. More exposure meant worse outcomes. That's actually good news in one way: it means cutting back on plastic contact during pregnancy could make a real difference.
Pregnant women can reduce exposure by using glass or stainless steel for food and drinks, avoiding heating food in plastic, and choosing natural fiber clothing when possible.
