Can synthetic turf fields release microplastics into the air your child breathes?

Verdict: Some Concern

Some Concern

What's actually in it

Synthetic turf fields use plastic grass blades and rubber infill (often made from recycled tires) to create a playing surface. Over time, the plastic fibers break down from UV light, foot traffic, and weather. This creates microplastic particles that become airborne, especially during active play when dust gets kicked up.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Geochem Health measured airborne microplastic emissions from synthetic sports surfaces and calculated the health risks for children. The study found that children playing on synthetic turf breathe in microplastic particles at levels that could pose health risks with regular exposure.

Kids are at higher risk because they breathe faster during exercise, their lungs are still developing, and they play closer to the ground where particle levels are highest. The rubber infill also contains heavy metals and PAH chemicals from recycled tires.

After playing on synthetic turf, have your child shower and change clothes to wash off particles. Choose natural grass fields when available. If your child plays on turf regularly, make sure they don't eat or drink on the field.
