Can titanium dioxide in candy and toothpaste build up in your organs?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. Titanium dioxide particles from food accumulate in the liver, spleen, kidneys, and gut, with levels increasing over time.

What's actually in it

Titanium dioxide (TiO2), listed as E171 on European labels, is a white pigment added to candy coatings, chewing gum, frosting, coffee creamer, toothpaste, and supplements. It makes products look brighter and more appealing. The particles are tiny, some in the nanoparticle range, which means they're small enough to cross biological barriers your body normally uses as defenses.

What the research says

A 2026 systematic review in Part Fibre Toxicol pulled together decades of animal studies on what happens when titanium dioxide is eaten repeatedly. The pattern was clear across dozens of studies: TiO2 particles accumulated in the liver, spleen, kidneys, and gut tissue after oral exposure.

The longer the exposure lasted, the more particles built up. Even after exposure stopped, the particles didn't fully clear from the body. They lingered in organs for weeks or months. Some studies found inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes in gene activity at the sites where TiO2 collected.

The European Food Safety Authority reviewed the evidence and concluded that TiO2 could no longer be considered safe as a food additive. The EU banned it from food in 2022. However, the United States still allows it, and it remains in many American candy brands, baked goods, and supplements.

Check ingredient lists for "titanium dioxide" or "E171." Many brands now use rice starch or calcium carbonate for whiteness instead. For toothpaste, look for brands that skip TiO2 and list their ingredients clearly.
