Illustration for Do nylon tea bags release microplastics when you brew tea?

Do loose-leaf tea or paper tea bags give you zero microplastic per cup?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Buy

Loose-leaf is the cleanest. Most paper bags still have plastic glue or coating, so they shed too. Loose-leaf wins.

What's actually in it

Most paper tea bags hide plastic. The corners are sealed with polypropylene glue. Some bags have a thin plastic coating baked into the paper to keep them from falling apart in boiling water. The fancy nylon pyramid bags are pure plastic. So even your "paper" bag may shed bits into the cup.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Sci Process Impacts watched nylon tea bags brew under real conditions. The team imaged plastic particles in the tea. Nylon pyramid bags released microplastics in every cup. Hotter water and longer steeps put more bits in the brew. Plastic-sealed paper bags shed less but still tested positive in earlier work.

Use loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser or a teapot strainer. Brands like Rishi, Harney & Sons, and Numi sell tins of loose-leaf. If you must use bags, look for "plastic-free" or "compostable string-and-tag" labels. Fold-style paper bags from old-school brands like Yogi tend to be cleaner than glued or pyramid styles.
