Do PFAS damage pancreatic beta cells the way prediabetes does?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieshome
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. PFAS line up with worse beta-cell function and lower insulin sensitivity in adults, a pattern that overlaps with early prediabetes.

What's actually in it

Beta cells in the pancreas make insulin. They need careful signaling to release insulin at the right moment. PFAS stick around in the body for years. They disturb the signaling that beta cells use, much like the early stages of prediabetes do. Over time, the cells make less insulin and the body becomes less sensitive to what insulin is there.

What the research says

A 2026 study in EClinicalMedicine measured PFAS in adults' blood and tracked markers of insulin secretion. Higher PFAS lined up with worse beta-cell function and lower insulin sensitivity. A 2026 paper in J Clin Endocrinol Metab found the same pattern in adult women.

Switch off nonstick cookware for cast iron or stainless. Filter tap water with reverse osmosis if local PFAS run high. Avoid greaseproof food wrappers and stain-resistant treated fabric. Build the diet around fiber, beans, and minimally processed foods, which helps insulin sensitivity directly.
