Do polypropylene baby bottles change how formula proteins break down?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

Yes in lab models. PP microplastic shifted the pattern of milk protein digestion in an infant gut model.

What's actually in it

Polypropylene (PP) is the plastic in many baby bottles, formula scoops, and pouches. Heat and shaking shed bits into the formula. Babies have a less acidic stomach than adults, which changes how plastic bits interact with milk proteins on the way down. The protein digestion pattern is what feeds nutrients into baby's blood.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Environ Pollut ran cow's milk plus PP microplastic and nanoplastic through an infant gastric digestion model. The plastic changed the pattern and speed of milk protein breakdown. That can affect how easily baby's gut absorbs nutrients and may train the immune system differently.

For bottle feeding, glass bottles are the cleanest pick. Brands like Lifefactory, Philips Avent Natural Glass, and Pyrex hold up to a fall. Stainless steel works too (Pura Kiki, Klean Kanteen Baby). If you use PP, mix and store formula in glass, cool it below body temperature, then pour into the bottle for feeding. Don't microwave PP.
