Do rubber ducks and squeezy bath toys grow mold and leach more chemicals as they age?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. The hidden inside of squeezy bath toys grows mold and the soft vinyl walls leach more phthalates as they break down.

What's actually in it

Most rubber ducks and squeezy bath toys are soft vinyl (PVC). Phthalates make the vinyl bendable. The toys fill with water through a small hole, sit warm and damp inside, and quickly grow mold. The soft vinyl walls also break down with hot bath water. Older toys leach more phthalates than fresh ones, and now you also have mold to worry about.

What the research says

Phthalates show up in bath water and kid skin samples after bath time. A 2026 study in Environ Int linked early phthalate exposure to changes in young brain wiring. The bath itself is a daily, warm, hands-in-mouth setup that builds exposure over the toddler years. Mold inside the toys can also trigger asthma and skin reactions.

Toss any squeezy bath toy that squirts cloudy water or has visible black inside. Switch to solid silicone, natural rubber (like Sophie la Girafe), or stainless steel bath toys. Solid silicone toys can be boiled to kill mold. Plain stainless cups and bowls work great for tub play, too.
